Gaseous Fire Suppression System

What is a Gaseous Fire Suppression System?

A gaseous fire suppression system is an efficient and non-damaging fire protection method that uses specific gaseous extinguishing agents to quickly suppress flames. It is widely used in data centers, server rooms, archives, museums, laboratories, and industrial facilities where water or foam-based extinguishing agents could cause damage.

Gaseous fire suppression systems extinguish fires through the following methods:

  1. Reducing Oxygen Levels: Inert gases lower the oxygen concentration in the protected area, making it insufficient to sustain combustion.
  2. Chemical Suppression of Combustion Reactions: Certain gaseous agents (such as FM-200 and Novec 1230) disrupt the free radical reactions in combustion, quickly extinguishing the flames.
  3. Heat Absorption and Cooling: Some gases (such as CO₂) absorb heat through vaporization, lowering the fire source temperature.

Main Types of Gaseous Fire Suppression Systems

Different environments require different gaseous fire suppression solutions, including:

  1. FM-200 (Heptafluoropropane)
    • Rapid fire suppression (within 10 seconds)
    • Leaves no residue and does not damage sensitive equipment
    • Suitable for data centers, server rooms, and laboratories

  1. Novec 1230
    • Environmentally friendly with a low Global Warming Potential (GWP)
    • Colorless, odorless, and evaporates quickly without causing corrosion
    • Ideal for medical facilities, museums, and archives

  1. Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)
    • Mainly used in unoccupied industrial facilities such as substations and boiler rooms
    • Quickly reduces oxygen levels but poses an asphyxiation risk at high concentrations

  1. IG Series Inert Gases (IG-55, IG-100, IG-541)
    • Composed of nitrogen, argon, or carbon dioxide
    • Environmentally friendly with zero greenhouse gas emissions
    • Suitable for large-scale data centers and heritage preservation sites

Gas Suppression System Standards in Australia

In Australia, Gas Suppression Systems must comply with key standards to ensure safety and effectiveness:

  • AS 4214 – Covers the design, installation, maintenance, and testing of gas suppression systems, including CO₂, FM-200, IG-55, and IG-541.
  • AS ISO 14520 Series – Defines the physical properties and design requirements of different gaseous fire extinguishing agents.
  • AS 1670.5 – Specifies fire detection, alarm integration, and control for special hazard environments like data centers.

Additionally, systems must comply with NCC (National Construction Code) and WHS (Work Health and Safety) laws.
